Artist’s Note:
A scattering of little white beads hovering at the base of a large tree caught my eye. It was a gorgeous day in May in my friend’s backyard. I bent down a bit to take a better look and discovered these little buds were standing on even more delicate bright red filaments! I got down on my hands and knees and came upon the ladybug! It was that rare moment of gasp - pure magic.
A month ago, I had the great surprise of catching the floating white buds again on a hike in the Catskills. This time, my plant identifier app was on the ready and identified it as Broom forkmoss. When I returned home, I realized its green tufts did indeed look like Broom forkmoss. However, the white ovate buds and red filaments did not match up. I think I am just going to have to invite myself over to my friend’s house again next May to grab a sample to have identified! I would really like to know its name as a start to get to know it better.
